The Earth, Divided

Thinking back on the first 10 chapters of Genesis, where did the division start? Did it begin in Peleg’s time? Was it when Ham shamed Noah, his father? Was it when mankind's every thought was evil and the flood came? Was it when Adam’s son was the first to murder? Was it when Adam and Eve were removed from the Garden of Eden?

“The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves….and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.” Genesis 3:6-8

It’s amazing how one “I want this” decision affected so much. Immediately it affected someone else. Immediately it affected their state of well-being. It didn’t stop there though. In our journey to look back, we saw family member after family member who was affected. Beyond even family members the whole world was resulting in the flood.

Who came to reverse this generational curse? Who removed the separation that was placed between us and God? Who helps us to look to them and others instead of ourselves?

“Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all people, because all sinned….Death reigned from Adam to Moses…But the gift is not like the trespass. For if by the one man’s trespass the many died, how much more have the grace of God and the gift which comes through the grace of the one man Jesus Christ overflowed to many.” Romans 5:12,14-15

It’s amazing how one “I want Jesus” decision affects so much. Immediately it affects a person's state of well-being. It doesn’t stop there though. In their journey, we can look back, and see family member after family member who is affected. Beyond even family members anyone they interact with can be changed. It has a completely opposite effect.

This choice stands before us today and every day. Which tree will we reach for? The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, seeking knowledge to accomplish what we want. or the Tree of Life, seeking God, the only one who will truly fill us and make us whole?
